Vivekananda House: A Hindu Center for Students
Pranav Sharma, Ashwanth L. Padmanabhan
Hindu YUVA, Iowa State University
The Hindu Student population on American campuses continues to grow and flourish. There is an ever-growing need to establish a Hindu Cultural Center on College Campuses in America. Although Hindu Community has built more than 1000 temples across the US, not a single Hindu institution which is built by the Hindu Community exists for the benefit of the Hindu Students on any of the college campuses. This abstract explores the possibility of financially viable Vivekananda Cultural Center at Iowa State University which will be named Vivekananda House.
The Vivekananda House will be a residential facility where 4 to 5 male students can live comfortably on the 2nd floor and have the 1st floor dedicated to activities of Hindu YUVA at ISU and other Hindu Cultural events such as Yoga, Pranayama, Chanting and lectures on Hindu Dharma. The idea is that the Hindu Students living at the Vivekananda House will pay discounted rent and the rent will cover the mortgage payment inclusive of Property Tax, Insurance, HOA and incidental maintenance costs. The students will sign a lease with the owners of the house and the lease will specify the conduct of the students.
- Having significant Hindu presence in university campuses will bring Hindu perspective in mainstream discourse of our country.
- This will institutionalize Hindu presence in University campuses, which can give more sustenance to the undertaken efforts.
