Determination Triumphs – Fight against HIV
Liza Bhansali, India
This is the story of Smt. Dhanalakshmi who has single-handedly organized more than 100 awareness camps for HIV patients to help them regain their confidence and self-esteem.
Dhanalakshmi comes from a small village in Mysore district. Her journey to public service began when many years ago she and her husband were diagnosed with AIDS and their diagnosis became public record due to gross negligence of the attending hospital. Due to the strong social stigma attached to AIDS in their rural community, they were both banished from their home and their village. Her husband died a few years later, leaving her without any means to support to herself. With a strong will to live, Dhanlakshmi came across a government-sponsored awareness camp which gave helped her gain access to affordable medicines and a chance to live.
However, she felt that it was not enough to recover from the disease. She decided to find a way to help other victims of HIV and give them the confidence to lead a normal life. With the help of several hospitals and organizations, she trained herself to become a medical counselor. With this training, she started an HIV counseling center to help the HIV sufferers to learn skills so they can earn their own livelihood. She has conducted more than 100 camps for HIV victims where she teaches them yoga, herbal medicine and other techniques to help them live their lives with confidence and self-esteem.
