Hindu Heritage Day Family Camp (HHFC)
Hansa and Kumar Dave, Indianapolis
Hindu Heritage Family Camp (HHFC) has been a nearly 20-year tradition at the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana. Starting from a one-day children’s camp in 2000, this initiative has since grown to become a 3-day family camping experience. 150 parents, youth, and children come together each year to learn about a certain theme in the shape of sessions, outdoor games, and interactive workshops. Not only does this camp foster meaningful relationships outside of the classroom, it is instrumental in satisfying the need for continuity in our Hindu education curriculum. As a result, the Balagokulam program has expanded in number and in depth of involvement since its conception; the underlying scaffold of an engaged community is a large component of its success. We present HHFC and the 10year HHFC book as a template with the hopes of inspiring similar valuable initiatives in other communities around the world.
