Yoga is defined as a discipline to develop one’s inherent power in a balanced manner. In recent times, this ancient Vedic science and philosophy has found its way into mental health, mindfulness, and as alternative therapies in mainstream medicine. While these developments have shed light on Yoga’s effects on the mind and body, there remains a gap in access to understanding yoga from a holistic sense.
iDoYoga is a community project established in 2015 by Dr. Hetal Nayak and her colleagues under the non-profit Sewa International intended to dedicate a day for the San Antonio community to come together and explore the journey of yoga and self. The project is designed with the several components, including: (A) creating a theme (B) establishing stakeholders, (C) recruiting knowledgeable yoga instructors/speakers (D) engaging the community, (E) creating a safe space, (F) securing funding and ultimately increasing awareness and access to yoga for everyone in the community.
2018 marks the 4th International Day of Yoga Festival in San Antonio. With new partnerships from the City of San Antonio as well as the Consulate General of India (Houston), and Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities for healthcare providers, the conference continues to grow every year. The funds raised support 3 local Yoga non-profits that offer free Yoga classes in underserved & veteran populations in the community. We hope that the iDoYoga Conference can serve as a model to inspire communities to come together & celebrate the idea that is Yoga.
