Youth: Experience the Joy of Giving
Sandeep Khadkekar, Sewa International
Sewa International provides volunteering and internship opportunities to promote volunteerism among the youth. Get Inspired is an annual summer internship program offered to college and high school students. It provides a platform for young adults to explore new ideas, and be instrumental in providing resources for ongoing projects of Sewa International. Interns undergo personal development and leadership training through a well-structured program. For example, the Get Inspired initiative has encouraged young adults to focus on the unique needs of refugees and assist Bhutanese immigrants who came to the United States as legal asylees and have settled in Atlanta, Cleveland, Chicago, Houston, and Seattle.
Lead is Sewa International’s summer internship program for high school students. Lead introduces socially conscious leadership to young adults. Interns commit to a minimum of 50 hours of service, including direct service at Sewa events. Interns interact with community leaders and professionals through engaging symposiums and field visits in June and July each year. Speakers include scientists, successful entrepreneurs, and public servants such as Mayors and Congressmen.
During 2017, Get Inspired and Lead internship programs were run at seven Sewa chapters through 28 outreach programs, involving 156 young volunteers who put in 11,980 hours of community service.
Yuva for Sewa (YFS) is a ten-week international summer internship program for American college students. Since its inception in 2006, YFS has provided 73 young men and women the opportunity to volunteer their time for different service projects in India, based on their interests and expertise.
