Educating to Eliminate Generational Poverty
Kavita Tewary, Sewa International, Houston, TX
Sewa International is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping humanity in distress. Our educational program ASPIRE (Assuring Student Performance in Remedial Education) focuses on providing refugee and immigrant children academic support through after-school tutoring sessions. ASPIRE works to support refugee and immigrant populations in underserved communities, providing them with vital resources, and helping them build the skills they need to achieve a better life. The program also promotes public health in the community, and overall development of the community. Sewa members work tirelessly within the local community bringing hope and offering support to the needy.
For the large immigrant high-school student population, we provide tutoring and mentoring programs to help them adjust to life in the United States. As the majority of these students face major challenges in their education due to language barriers and a lack of support at home, these gaps, if they remain unchecked, will lead to truancy, failure, and a dire future for these children. Educational difficulties are barriers to higher education, which in turns results in a lower standard of life. Sewa International addresses the educational needs of these refugee/immigrant children with one-on-one tutoring. Sewa pursues several educational strategies to equip students with the skills they need to become productive members of our society. We believe this will help in eliminating generational poverty in our communities.
