Supplementing Curriculum: Presenting Positive Image of India in American Schools
Smita Turakhia and Robert Arnett
Atman Press, 2104 Cherokee Ave, Columbus, GA 31906
Smita Turakhia and Robert Arnett have collaborated to create two multi-award-winning books, India Unveiled and Finders Keepers?. They initiated the School Library Book Project to set a new paradigm of how Hinduism and India’s culture is perceived in schools. The project has been completed in 10 entire states and several major cities with each book being in over 12,000 schools, public libraries and classrooms in USA.
The main objective is to place resource books in libraries and classrooms to educate teachers and students about Hinduism and India’s culture by presenting accurate and favorable information so students form correct impressions and understanding during their formative years. With school budgets slashed, the responsibility to place supplementary books in schools rests solely with the Indian-American community.
Because of its impressive track record, favorable reviews in prestigious library magazines, quality, and information, the schools are not only delighted to receive the books, but acceptance is not an issue.
Both of us do all work with no fees involved and no employees. We get school approval, affix donor bookplates in all books, pack and ship to school districts, and send delivery confirmation details for all books to donors. Books are priced to cover cost of books, bulk shipping, and minimal operating costs. Atman Press is partnered with Indian American Education Foundation (IAEF), Seattle, WA and donations can be made to IAEF.
From the hundreds of letters we have received, the superintendents, librarians, and principals are delighted to receive the books and grateful for the donation.
The project is ongoing and our goal is to get both books in all states.
